The Holy Rosary

The most powerful prayer to Our Lady, meditating on the mysteries of Christ's life through the intercession of Mary.

Duration: 15-20 minutes per set of mysteries

History

The Rosary is a meditation on the life of Christ through the eyes of Mary. According to tradition, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1214 and gave him the Rosary as a spiritual weapon against the Albigensian heresy. The Rosary consists of four sets of mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous (added by Pope John Paul II in 2002). Each set contains five mysteries, and each mystery is accompanied by one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and one Glory Be. Many popes have encouraged the faithful to pray the Rosary. Pope Leo XIII issued eleven encyclicals on the Rosary, and Our Lady of Fatima specifically requested that Catholics pray the Rosary daily for world peace.
